Greetings,
Persons from the Caribbean and Asia are familiar with Cerasee, also known as bitter gourd, bitter melon tea or Momordica charantia, it is a traditional herbal remedy that has been used in various cultures for centuries. Cerasee is known for its distinctively bitter taste and is derived from the leaves and vines of the bitter melon plant. The bitterness is absolutely an acquired taste however, the numerous health benefits of drinking Cerasee make it worth considering as part of your wellness routine.
Cerasee is a tea made from the leaves and vines of the bitter melon plant, which is native to tropical and subtropical regions. Bitter melon itself is a fruit that resembles a cucumber with a warty skin and is widely used in Asian, African, and Caribbean cuisines. Cerasee tea is particularly popular in Caribbean and African traditional medicine, where it is consumed for its various health-promoting properties. I am wanting to reduce my sugar intake so the benefits of me drinking this bush tea are numerous.
Health Benefits of Cerasee
-
Regulates Blood Sugar Levels
One of the most well-known benefits of Cerasee is its ability to help regulate blood sugar levels. The compounds in bitter melon, such as charantin, polypeptide-p, and vicine, have been shown to have insulin-like effects. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with diabetes or those at risk of developing the condition.
-
Aids Digestion
Cerasee tea is known to aid digestion and promote a healthy digestive system. It can help relieve constipation, reduce bloating, and cleanse the digestive tract. The bitter properties stimulate the production of digestive enzymes, enhancing overall digestive health.
-
Detoxifies the Body
Drinking Cerasee tea can help detoxify the body by promoting the removal of toxins. The tea acts as a natural diuretic, encouraging the elimination of waste through urine. This detoxifying effect can contribute to improved kidney function and overall health.
-
Boosts Immune System
Cerasee is rich in vitamins and antioxidants, which can help boost the immune system. The high levels of vitamin C and other antioxidants in bitter melon help protect the body from oxidative stress and support the immune system in fighting off infections.
-
Promotes Skin Health
The detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties of Cerasee can also benefit the skin. Regular consumption of Cerasee tea can help clear up skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. The tea's antibacterial properties can further support skin health and reduce the occurrence of skin infections.
When I have been in Jamaica, I have had fresh Cerasee tea, made from leaves just picked from from the garden. Somehow the taste didn't seem as bitter, it was beautiful.
